Written for a female vocal ensemble, Air falbh leis na h-eòin reinterprets archive, fragmenting and re-weaving extracts of Gaelic songs into an extended soundscape that emerges from and responds to island landscapes and lives. It explores the equilibrium of island-life, the co-existence of history and innovation, the relationships between bird, human and ecology.

'The piece is made from weaving together fragments of traditional songs and poems that imitate or emulate birdsong' Tuulikki explains. 'Each movement represents a different habitat and bird community. The concert will be performed in Canna Bay. The setting itself is so important to the piece. The Small Isles are a magical place and, to me, the performance begins as soon as people climb on-board the ferry-boat to make the crossing: it's the experience of taking people on a journey.'

Away with the Birds was conceived for and with the Isle of Canna. Canna is steeped in the Gaelic tradition, but has always welcomed artists and musicians from across the world. John Lorne Campbell and Margaret Fay Shaw - the last Laird and Lady of the island - were revered ethnomusicologists who collected an extraordinary archive of Gaelic material. When they lived in Canna House, their artistic social circle constituted a Hebridean version of the Bloomsbury Group. Today, the island's small but vibrant population are working towards re-invigorating Canna as a cultural hub: Air falbh leis na h'eòin sits at the centre of this ambition.

Produced by Suzy Glass in association with Tramway, the Canna Community Development Trust, National Trust for Scotland and Cape Farewell.

Part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.

Tickets are non-refundable unless performances are cancelled due to severe weather leading to Calmac ferry disruption.
