2009 Birmingham SHOUT
Sissyboy Opening Night Event 8:00p + Friday, May 29 preceeded by filmmaker reception at 6:30p
Portland, Oregon might not be the first place you think of when it comes to social commentary, but the members of Sissyboy might disagree. Katie Turinski makes her filmmaking debut with Sissyboy, a documentary following a group of Portland-area gender-benders and the final performances of their ambitious troupe.
This is not your daddys drag queen movie.
Sissyboy is group therapy for twelve gay men who use the stage to be the monsters that haunted us as we were growing up and the ones that still haunt us today. The film takes an outside look at these men, their art and the common threads that bind them together. Personal, painful and altogether uplifting, Sissyboy is a film about finding common ground and making the most out of everything.
