Moon Landing: Screening and Live Event

Our landing on the moon 40 years ago this July 20 was not only a giant leap for mankind, but also a milestone live media event. Cinema pioneer Gene Youngblood (Expanded Cinema) noted: "On July 20, 1969, approximately 400 million world people watched the same Warhol movie at the same time. Theres no appreciable difference between four hours of Empire and four hours of LM [lunar module]." If you were alive on July 20, 1969, near midnight on that evening you were probably watching the lunar landing on a grainy black-and-white television, or listening to Armstrong's "one small step" transmission early the next morning. If not, you are most likely part of a generation for whom the footage served as a promo for MTV. Join us as we commemorate this profound event for humankind with a 40th anniversary screening of the original television broadcast (at 7pm), followed by a live remix presentation in which filmmaker and sound artist Joe Milutis reworks images of major NASA events leading up to and including the landing.
