About the Production:
Written during the McCarthy era, a period of intense fear of communism in America in the early 1950s, the opera Susannah is based loosely on the biblical tale of Susannah and the Elders. In New Hope Valley, Tennessee, Susannah, a pretty and well-mannered young woman of humble origins, is faced with hostility from her church community. A series of misunderstood encounters and mishaps result in tragedy.
Born in 1926 in South Carolina, the son of a Methodist minister, composer Carlisle Floyd's experiences as a child were that of the Southern Bible Belt with its travelling preachers, revival meetings and strong sense of community, which also offered him a view of the darker side of Southern fundamentalism, its bigotry, and hypocrisy.

Composed 50 years ago at the height of the McCarthy persecutions, [Susannah] is a flawlessly effective melodrama focused on an innocent woman victimized by a
narrow Evangelical community in rural Tennessee. it speaks straight to the heart through music of uninhibited tonal simplicity and Pucciniesque fervour. - Daily Telegraph.
