TorQ Generations and Geographies Concert Series: "Strange and Sacred Noise"
On May 9th at 8pm, TorQ Percussion Quartet presents the final concert in our 2013-2014 Generations and Geographies concert series: the Canadian premiere of John Luther Adams' "Strange and Sacred Noise" for percussion quartet. Taking place in Toronto's spectacular Church of the Holy Trinity, and with a lighting design by acclaimed Toronto designer Oz Weaver, Strange and Sacred Noise is a powerful, concert-length work that explores the idea of sonic geography - and sound as "place" - and envelops the audience in sounds that roar and whisper.
"Strange and Sacred Noise is a masterpiece, not just for percussion music, but for contemporary classical / experimental / avant-garde / whatever-you-want-to-call-it music." - Christian Hertzog, Sequenza 21
"The music seemed to enact vast and complex natural processes, as if I were witnessing, in sonic form, the solar system forming or the continents shifting. It had an incredible visceral impact" - San Francisco Classical Voice
Called "one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century" (Alex Ross, The New Yorker), John Luther Adams is a composer whose life and work are deeply rooted in the natural world.
Adams composes for orchestra, chamber ensembles, percussion and electronic media, and his music is recorded on Cold Blue, New World, Mode, Cantaloupe, and New Albion.
A recipient of the Heinz Award for his contributions to raising environmental awareness, Adams has also been honored with the Nemmers Prize from Northwestern University "for melding the physical and musical worlds into a unique artistic vision that transcends stylistic boundaries."
In April 2014, John Luther Adams was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his composition "Becoming Oceans".
