DJ Icey Bio:
U.S. based DJ Icey developed his passion for the beat by his steady diet of Miami Bass, 90s Hip Hop, Freestyle and Acid House back in the day. On the strength of his late 90s singles and album output, championed by DJs the world over, Icey burst onto the global scene with his award winning Essential Mix compilation released on FFRR in 2000,. This EDM legend's dedication to DJ'ing and Producing has earned him high acclaim from music fans to industry professionals.
DJ Icey, real name Eddie Pappa, is a DJ, artist, producer and label head. Icey signature sound of deep dirty bass, fat beats and electronica elements serve him and his legions of fans on the dance floor well. His chart topping productions in multiple genres are embraced by DJs worldwide. Icey's success can be attributed to his relentless workflow, from constant touring to non stop studio action, where he is either crafting new original music or putting his signature touch on tracks for remixes and rerubs to play in his legendary energy filled DJ sets.
For well over a decade Icey's trademark sound of bass and beats has soundtracked dance floors worldwide. His indie label Zone is a top player in the worldwide Booty Bass / Breaks /EDM scene. Icey's passion for the music is undeniable and on display in his constant touring from major festivals to intimate club spaces, where his goal is to deliver an ass shaking good time to the people on the dance floor.
Icey drops his highly anticipated new artist album Trackotron in 2014. He is always delivering new tunes on Beatport as well his famous Automatic Static mix sets and free tunes on his Soundcloud. Icey's sound is instantaneously recognizable yet always pushing the boundaries of the broken beat bass scene.
DJ, producer, vocalist Colette has grown from an integral part of the Chicago underground into a breakout musical triple-threat releasing her most accomplished and fully realized artistic statement to date. Combining the tunefulness of classic pop songs with the thump of classic house of her hometown, the album ventures into new sonic territory for Colette, from intimate bedroom beats to stadium-shaking dance anthems. When the Music's Loud is the sound of an artist at the peak of her powers.
"I grew up listening to pop in the '80s, and as I got older, I was really deep into the '90s house scene," says COLETTE when talking about the shockingly panoramic sounds found on her third studio full-length, When the Music's Loud (Candy Talk Records). "For me, these two elements are always sort of married. This album is my way of bringing those sounds together as one."
"We started crafting this record, and it wasn't until we wrote 'Electricity' that we figured out what we really wanted to do," Colette explains of the new album's origins. "Even though it's so far away from what I normally do, the tone of it was where we clicked," referencing her longtime songwriting partner Tim K. "It was different, but it still sounded familiar, and it was exciting to us."
The album is awash with the robotic sounds of the vocoder, famously used to legendary effect by such pioneers as Giorgio Moroder and Electric Light Orchestra, but here is applied by Colette in her own inimitable fashion.
"We put them in as slight undertones in some songs, so you might not even notice that they're there," she explains. "The first time I ever saw someone use a vocoder was when I was 8. My friend's parents were in a band, and they had one of those keyboards with the hose attachment that you would sing into for the vocoder effect. From that moment on, I always thought they were cool. That was a theme as well for us on this album: We wanted to take these old elements and use them in a modern way."
"We were influenced by Kraftwerk, Africa Bambaataa, Adonis and Romanthony," Colette reveals. "'80's futurism was the inspiration and launch pad for this album."
Lyrically, When the Music's Loud finds Colette looking back at her 20 years of making music and clearly seeing what was really important on the journey from then to now.
"We were thinking about the countless stories from the ongoing travels of life. There are some love stories in there, but it's more about friendship and the people around you as you grow. I've had the same group of friends for 20 years, and we were all in this environment together. We're family."
Those enduring Chicago connections are most apparent with the song "Hotwire," which rides over the instrumental beat of acid house legend Adonis' 1986 underground club classic, "No Way Back."
"I've loved acid bass lines since I was a child. They always add a lot of flavor," Colette says. "To be able to have that sound and Adonis' music on a record is really special. It feels like home."
While Colette has evolved into a seasoned songwriter and producer, she's never far from the DJ decks, perpetually on tour traveling the globe spinning crowd-pleasing and party rocking sets from Los Angeles to Tokyo.
"We're at an interesting place in 2013," she surmises. "Dance music is so popular in America right now, but it's for the commercial aspect of the sound. For an underground DJ like me, I find myself spinning for crowds that are made up of people who've been with me for the last 15 years right next to these new, fresh faces still getting into the music. It's definitely a jugging act making it work for everyone, including myself, but it's a challenge I still love and look forward to every night I'm in the club. It's fun, but there's a lot of thought that goes into what I'm playing."
The music, the memories, the people, the places it's a journey that Colette has shared with the world around her for as long as she's been able, cultivating a large and loyal fan base that's always eager to support the sounds she brings to light.
"Getting to play music is everything to me," she says. "2013 and 2014 will be all about sharing this record. I will always play versions of my other songs, but When the Music's Loud is something I'm really excited about. I'm hopeful that people will like it and want to continue on this journey with me."
Frankie Bones Bio:
'First DJ in America to play the early rave/festival circuit in the U.K. @ Energy in 1989 to 25,000 people. Then pioneered the scene in the U.S. at the very beginning on both coasts.
The timing of this was at the very start of 1990. And anything that connects todays scene, the festivals and EDM started in the very first moments of 1990.
Sure we had clubs in the states, and House & Techno in the 1980s but we were all stuck in our own city limits, but the U.K. youth picked up on our music, Chicago, Detroit, New York and that is what fueled their early scene. The Rave Scene in London had become the next big thing. I knew my music was becoming more popular in London then in New York. So a tour was planned, headlining a 5000 person event called I walked into his future that morning 25,000 people in unison were about to witness the strength of street knowledge.
The promoter Tin Tin Chambers wrote: "When Frankie saw it, it totally took his head off. He played the morning set til the sun came up, so he played the dawn, basically. For him to witness the impact of the people, who would chant & sing to the music he made and played, it really blew him away. Of course he would bring that back to America, but up to that point, there never was a scene in America. He went back and wrote "Energy Dawn" for XL and that turned into quite the classic".
"I met Paul Oakenfold & Carl Cox that night. They all made history @ Energy. I now thrust right into the minds of the U.K. youth. The rest of Europe paying close attention and I'm playing the first events in France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Holland. The history left in the names of the 1990 & 1991 Love Parade's in Germany. "My House Is Your House" & "The Future Is Ours". Tracks produced by me made me an early rising star in Germany.
I never really wanted to rise to fame and fortune in Europe. In fact I was quite content with my former New York City status and many times homesick after living on and off in London. It was a hectic schedule which included many countries and lots of travel. It was not a problem for the first year, but when I realized the potential in America after being booked as London's most recognized rave DJ for a party in Los Angeles, the countdown had begun. June 1, 1990. The promoters were expecting a Brit and were virtually upset when they heard a New York accent. They had no idea. Now I realized the West Coast scene was also about to explode, I went back to Brooklyn and started throwing STORMrave.
I became popular on both coasts simultaneously. From 1990 on. It spread quickly towards the center and by 1993 you pretty much had a scene in every state in the nation. I am the only DJ able to be part of all three original scenes which fueled rave. It was here where the origins of PLUR began."
