Greek Wine Tasting
Simply put: the holy grail of a wine education is to be able to sit down to a meal, find a great pairing and not pay a price that doesn't distract from the enjoyment of the meal. Greek wines occupy the increasingly sparse value niche in the wine world by mastering the tension of the already/not yet: already great/not yet widely discovered and appreciated by the international wine guzzling masses. On the whole, decidedly Old World in structure, favoring restraint and earthy tones over opulent (slutty) fruit profiles, but still easy to understand with its emphasis on varietal purity and simplicity in labeling language, Greece is poised to capitalize on the excitement of its diverse indigenous varietals: Assyrtiko, Xinomavro, Agorgitiko, Moschofillero, Aidani, Malagousia, and Limnio. It's easy to see why Greek wines are equally exciting for both the wine geek and the casual consumer, the trove of new flavor profiles promises to break through the pinot/cab/chard/ sauvie-bee doldrums, and what more appropriate place for even the most jaded to fall back in love with wine, where it all began.
