Seminar Summary:
The CALGreen building code will be ramped up to include exceeding energy model minimums by 25%.  How can architects prepare for the new code changes, how can they better work with project teams, and how can they drive value by enhancing services to clients? This presentation will focus on the 2014 changes to CALGreen, changes to the Energy Code and how that will impact architecture from a code compliance point of view.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn what will be new requirements for the 2014 building code and how will design be impacted
2. Learn what building commissioning is and when the design team is required to address commissioning
3. Learn how energy modeling will be scrutinized with the new code and what opportunities do project teams have to design to code and to efficiency
4. Learn how Architects can enhance deliverables with the new code requirements

Speaker Bios:

Charles Russell, C.B.O. - Vice President, VCA Green

Charles "Russ" Russell joined VCA Green as Vice President in 2008 and is responsible for the operations and management of the division, which provides green consulting and commissioning services. He brings more than 20 years of building code experience to his role at VCA Green.

Recently, Mr. Russell has been touring the state of California presenting seminars and has spoken to more than 6,000 attendees on the implementation of CALGreen. These seminars are in collaboration with the Building Standards Commission (BSC), State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), and Green Technology of Pasadena. The topics of the seminars range from a general introduction to CALGreen to in-depth residential and commercial applications. The audiences for these seminars include architects, engineers, government officials, contractors, developers, and consultants.

VCA Green provides CALGreen code consultation and education to assist municipal jurisdictions and design professionals with current and future code requirements. VCA Green provides technical services and verifications with code requirements, such as, building commissioning and Home Energy Rating System (HERS).

VCA Green is an industry leader and works in collaboration with building officials on implementation of CALGreen and other building codes. To further enhance VCAs Green capabilities, the staff includes four LEED APs, a Certified Commissioning Agent, an Energy Modeler, a Green Point Rater, a HERS Rater, and a Building Performance Analyst, all of whom can offer management and assistance on selected third party green building programs.

Moe Fakih LEED AP MPA, (Green Rater, O+M), GPR, BPI - Director of Sustainability, VCA Green

Moe Fakih possesses both private and public sector experience, working as a City Planner in Orange County processing project entitlements totaling millions of dollars and presenting project details to the public. Prior to joining VCA Green, Mr. Fakih was principal at AEF Consulting, Engineering, & Construction, Inc., a Southern California sustainability consulting-construction firm specializing in California Green Building Code and LEED projects.

Early in his sustainability career, Mr. Fakih certified a LEED Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance gold level hotel in San Francisco, the first hotel in the world to achieve the title. He later designed and built the first LEED Commercial Interior remodel in Anaheim Hills, implementing sustainable improvement strategies that reduced electricity costs by over 50% and water consumption costs by 43%.

Mr. Fakih has established sustainability polices for new construction and existing building owners that have strong return on investment (under two years), favorable internal rate of return (up to 355%), sizeable net present value, met code compliance, and delivered differentiation by intelligent branding.

In 2008, Mr. Fakih flew to Washington D.C. to help establish weights to the LEED Buildings Operations & Maintenance National Accreditation test.  In 2009, he chaired the first LEED Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance U.S. Green Building Council Sub-Committee.  He drafted a white paper on California Green Building code verification measures that assists building inspectors and plans examiners verify CalGreen code compliance.   Active in the community, Mr. Fakih served as the "Sustainability Judge" for restaurants participating in the first annual Sustainable Business Council's People's Choice Awards.
