Quicksand  Magnetizing Movements with Heather Powers
11:30-1:30

Remarkable magic happens when a performer slows it down to the point where it looks like they are dragging through the mud. We will work on digging deep to get those strong yet fluid motions that mesmerize viewers. Focus will be on intentional movement through a fully committed approach that oozes hypnotic qualities. We will be working with a full range of movements in the arms, hips, and upper body while learning to freeze movements and push through with integrity. Movements will be broken down into their muscular parts and we will push ourselves beyond our own understanding of our dance vocabulary.

Terpsichore, Thalia & Melpomene: An Introduction to Theatrical Belly Dance
2:00 to 4:00

Terpsichore, Thalia & Melpomene, the muse of dance, the theatrical muses of comedy and  tragedy. How do we bring together the voices of these three sisters?  How does one strike a balance between dance technique and theatrical expression?  Whether new to the dance or seeking to add a deeper emotional voice to your performance this workshop bridges the connection between these two disciplines.

Using theatrical improvisational exercises to connect with character and emotion combined with dance technique we will transform our dance into deep emotional expression. Students will explore rhythmic physical storytelling as well as energetic and emotional projection. While there will be an emphasis on improvisation students will also learn how to add an emotional overlay to existing choreography.

The workshop is conducted to live music provided by Stephen Carpenter.

In order to facilitate free exploration we seek to create a safe space for all types of dancers to explore creative expression.  Mistakes are not only expected, but encouraged.  Classes are open to students who have at least one session of belly dance classes or have a basic understanding of belly dance movement.

Joie Grandbois

Dancer, choreographer, musician, writerstoryteller. Whether she is using the medium of dance, rhythm or words Joie seeks to bring to life the character present in a creative work. A lifelong dancer Joie entered the world of belly dance through the side door of raqs gothique after falling in love with its dramatic storytelling nature. Her dance explorations have also led to a study of cabaret and Turkish styles of the dance expanding her love of the art form. She is also a student of Middle Eastern percussion, specifically the riqq, and has a love of playing the zills. Blending the arts of music and theater with the improvisational nature of belly dance she brings drama, humor and an appreciation for the unexpected to the stage.

In teaching theatrical belly dance Joie seeks to share not only technique but to also create a safe space for dancers to explore and step beyond their creative boundaries. She hopes to initiate the conversation between artist and muse so that each dancer may connect with and express their own unique voice.

She is the founder and director of the street vaudeville performance troupe Dark Follies which formed in 2008 and performs as a solo artist around New England.. She teaches Theatrical and Exploratory Belly Dance in Portland, Maine at Bright Star World Dance. www.joiegrandbois.blogspot.com www.darkfollies.com joiegrandbois@gmail.com

Stephen has played with variety of performers in Maine and around New England in both stage and classroom settings. Through the voice of the drum and ney he seeks to create a conversation between the music, dancer and audience. He is a founding member of the band Spoonmaker's Diamond and for the past four years he has been the musical director for the Portland, Maine based street vaudeville troupe Dark Follies. Stephen is also a professional woodworker who crafts many of the instruments he plays upon.
