C. P. E. Bach's Playlist - Lincoln
This final program of our season devoted to C.P.E. Bach focusses on the music that he would have been raised on: that of his father, Sebastian Bach, and godfather, Telemann. The works of these two composers were important touchstones throughout C.P.E. Bach's life. After the death of Sebastian Bach in 1750, the lion's share of his music manuscripts went to Emanuel, who carefully curated and disseminated them, even having certain works published posthumously, including the Art of Fugue and the collection of chorales. In 1768, Emanuel succeeded Telemann as music director in Hamburg; he would then have had the chance to become reacquainted with the chamber and orchestral music which he would have known as a student in Leipzig in the 1730s, as well as to become acquainted for the first time with the bulk of Telemann's output of sacred cantatas and oratorios. Even as Emanuel Bach was writing some of his most adventurous and rawly expressive keyboard works and empfindsamer vocal odes, he was engaging on a daily basis with the "old" music of Sebastian Bach and Telemann. His personal reverence for these men is well known; his artistic debt to them, even though they seem worlds apart sometimes, is equally important.
