Once on This Island follows the journey of a young girl who is faced with a powerful choice and a challenge in exchange for making her dream and wish come true. Once on This Island is based on the cultural, religious and racial divisions between a ruling class and the rural peasants. The show is a love story that explores the power of love over death and deals with issues of "difference" in which cultures foster stereotypes and prejudices based on external differences such as race and wealth. The energetic, contemporary book and music by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (the song-writing team of Seussical and the animated film Anastasia) breathes life into the production. Based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, the musical is a loose retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid set in the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea.
