The new documentary THE SARNOS: A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES offers a look at sexploitation cinema's greatest filmmaker, as well as a portrait of an enduring marriage. Screens with Sarno's classic SIN IN THE SUBURBS!

Director Joe Sarno passed away four years ago, at the age of 89. Arguably the greatest American softcore erotic filmmaker, Sarno also made movies in Sweden, and the new documentary THE SARNOS: A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES is director Wictor Ericsson's affectionate portrait of Sarno in his final years (in both New York and Sweden). The film that emerges is a look at one of the key figures of sexploitation cinema, but also a tender examination of a remarkable marriage, as Sarno's wife of forty years, Peggy, takes center stage as an invaluable collaborator. Sarno's work was distinguished by an interest in the emotional and carnal entanglements of his troubled characters, and by his emphasis on the female sexual experience. Beginning in the 60s with "adults only" dramas like MOONLIGHTING WIVES, INGA, and RED ROSES OF PASSION, Sarno would move into more explicit fare in the 70s with such works as YOUNG PLAYTHINGS and CONFESSIONS OF A YOUNG AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE, and then ultimately (reluctantly, and usually pseudonymously) direct hardcore later in his career. But Sarno's films always displayed an intelligence and beauty rare in the world of adult cinema, and this documentary -- also filled with insights from the likes of John Waters and Annie Sprinkle -- offers a surprisingly moving study of a love affair that undoubtedly informed his work.

Screening with SIN IN THE SUBURBS, one of the earliest of Sarno's 60s black-and-white dramas, this is also one of his best! Spouse-swapping in the 'burbs, complete with a creepy masquerade swingers' party that predates EYES WIDE SHUT by several decades. Courtesy of Something Weird. (TC)

Danger After Dark's Travis Crawford will be in attendance to introduce the screening.
