Family Style Open Mic
This month, our featured guest artist is Sahra Nguyen!

A multidisciplinary artist currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Sahra has served as the Director of the Writing Success Program at the University of California, Los Angeles where she helped undergraduate students develop their critical thinking, self-confidence and agency through the writing process. Her writing primarily explores themes of identity, race in America, the Vietnamese American experience and the power of human potential. Sahra has self-published an e-book titled, "One Ounce Gold," and she has been published in the print anthology, "Pho For Life" available on Amazon.com. She has toured Universities all across the country speaking, performing poetry and facilitating workshops aimed to empower and inspire audiences. More recently, Sahra was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in a celebration of Asian American artists. Visit her at www.riotinthesky.com.

This March also features a special presentation by the youth group of Boat People SOS, made in collaboration with visiting artist Rick Shiomi. BPSOS-Delaware Valley is the local branch of the largest national Vietnamese-American community-based organization with the mission to "empower, organize, and equip Vietnamese individuals and communities in their pursuit of liberty and dignity." We created an English-speaking Asian American youth group called Youth of Philadelphia Organizing for Power(YPOP), formed in January 2013. YPOP is a collective of young activist leaders that work to create transformative social change through teamwork, popular education, the exploration and critical analysis of social and political issues, the development of positive personal and collective identities, and the coordination of community events with the purpose of building youth power.

And a last treatmusician and Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival organizer Rob Buscher will be playing live during our opening reception!

Admission is $5-10 sliding scale.
