This will be the tenth year since the passing of Horace Tapscott There are many dreams that Horace requested, such as preserving the artistic works from our community and a venue to showcase the various beautiful contributions by musicians and artist. Always dearest to his heart the main part of Horaces dream was the youth being able to capture the opportunity to enjoy and participate in Americas truest art form. An art form he called African American Musical Classics.
In the mid 1960s, Mr. Tapscott formed the Great Voice of UGMAA (Union of Gods Musicians and Artist Ascension) to expand the richness of the musical experience offered by the ARK. Currently under the direction of lead vocalist extrordinaire Dwight Trible, this powerful choir speaks as one voice for the community, in truth and love.
These two musical entities combine to preserve Mr. Tapscotts ultimate vision of a community-based group of artist dedicated to performing and preserving the original compositions of Pan-African artist throughout the world. This amazing musical experience is the very heart of Horace Tapscotts dream of empowering his community to contribute to the world the cultural and artist creativity of peoples of color everywhere.
UNION OF GODS MUSICIANS AND ARTIST ASCENSION "We are a performing arts organization comprised of instrumentalists, vocalist, dancers, writers, poets and teachers. The ARK, as it is affectionately referred to, was formed in the Los angeles area in the early 1960s by the late composer/pianist, Horace Tapscott. Under the musical direction of saxophonist Michael Session, the Pan African Peoples Arkestra features world renown musicians such as pianist Nate Morgan, bassist Roberto Miranda, saxophonist Azar Lawrence and trumpeter Steven Smith. This unique musical ensemble is the realization of Mr. Tapscotrts vision of developing and showcasing the extraordinary talents of artists from the local community. In the mid 1960s, Mr. Tapscott formed the Great Voice of UGMAA (Union of Gods Musicians and Artist Ascension) to expand the richness of the musical experience offered by the ARK.
