Lizette Casals and Tony Sala in "Songs of a Latin Heart"
"Songs for a Latin Heart," featuring soprano Lizette Casals and pianist Tony Sala performing operatic, theater and popular music with a Latin flavor, will be the next performance in the Four Seasons Concert Series, on April 12 at Trinity Memorial Church in Center City. Members of the Kauriga Orchestra will accompany the duo.
Casals has appeared locally with the American Music Theater Festival, Delaware Valley Opera Company, the Latin American Guild for the Arts, Opera Delaware, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, and Relâche.
She also performs frequently in jazz, Latin, worship and wedding bands in the Tri-State area. Born in Abington, PA to Cuban-Honduran parents, Casals earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of the Arts and a Masters Degree in Opera Performance from Temple University. Her recent cd is available at: www.cdbaby/cd/lizettecasals.
Born in Havana, Sala started piano lessons at age six, completing piano studies at the Peyrellade Conservatory in Havana at 17. He graduated from Villanova University's branch campus in Havana with a B.S. in accounting in 1958 and three years later moved to Philadelphia, where he embarked on a successful, 40-year career in accounting and finance.
Sala has volunteered as a church organist for nearly 30 years, joined in organizing the Latin American Guild for the Arts in Philadelphia and has maintained a diligent focus on playing the piano throughout his life. After retiring from his accounting career in 2003 Sala continued to delight live audiences with his music and produced five albums. An album of his own compositions is scheduled for release in 2015. His music is available at: www.cdbaby.com/all/tonysala. Web site: www.salamalatino.com.
The concert will take place at Trinity Memorial Church, 22nd and Spruce Streets, starting at 7:30 PM. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling the church office at (215) 732-2515.
