Speech & Debate
SPACE Gallery Portland, ME
Sex, Secrets, and Performance-Art Video-Blogging: Speech and Debate is Stephen Karam's fiercely funny and surprisingly timely new play, and SPACE's inaugural theatrical production. Three teenage outsiders in Salem, Oregon discover they are connected by a shocking scandal involving one of their teachers. They take on the serious responsibility for unmasking the truth in a ridiculous way - by founding the schools first Speech & Debate club and mashing its competitive events into their own fantastically awkward version of theatrical catharsis, complete with time-traveling witches, a gay Abraham Lincoln, and a George Michael dance break. Starring Rachel Flehinger, Chris Reiling, Philip Hobby, Amanda Huotari. Directed by Sean Mewshaw. Designed by Colin Sullivan-Stevens.
