The final concert of our 40th Season will focus on the number 40 through music, including U2's wonderful piece 40, and Thomas Tallis's rarely heard Spem in Alium. His ambitious piece was written for eight separate choirs of five voices each, for a total of for 40 individual parts. We don't know of another regional choir that has tackled this incredibly challenging and brilliant composition.
XL also celebrates two of Oregon Repertory Singers' greatest musical explorations from its 40-year history: the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Eric Whitacre. Oregon Repertory Singers was one of the first regional ensembles to champion the choral music of both of these world-renowned composers, and we celebrate this by revisiting several pieces by each composer. We also continue our tradition of advancing emerging composers. We will perform music by Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds (whose music captivated audiences last season with the performance of his Passion and Resurrection), and a wonderful young British star Paul Meallor, whose music was recently heard at The Royal Wedding.
