the planet project, a start up non profit, and it's current campaign hu-MAN Up, are Lancaster-based, intergenerational organizations consisting of men and women preventing sexism and gender based violence. Join us for our launch weekend, BECOMING HUMAN: Words and images to end rape culture. It begins with a First Friday Gallery Opening on Friday April 3, featuring designs and writing submitted by artists and writers from Lancaster and as far away as New Zealand. The designs carry preventive messages aimed at men in the form of billboards, bus signs, and tee shirts. Students form Penn State, Harrisburg are submitting posters, and several artists, including Paul Manlove and Mimi Shapiro are donating fine art. The show will hang in Zoetropolis Gallery throughout April. The launch weekend continues with performances of :BECOMING HUMAN: Voices to end rape culture, a groundbreaking anthology featuring monologues and spoken word selected from submissions, edited by Adele Taylor Ulrich, who is also co-directing the show with Ray Manlove, Actors will be accompanied by cellist Lisa Daniels and violinist Claudia Harrison. against a backdrop of video images, as they interpret contributions by two-time US Slam Poet Champion, Guante, two-time Vancouver Slam Poet Champion, Jeremy Loveday, local playwrights Sandra Feichel Asher and Adele Taylor Ulrich as well as an anonymous submission from a viral Craig's List Missed Connection post and a host of other powerful, moving, edgy and even funny pieces.
"Although the anthology illuminates struggle, it offers close up and wide-angle views of the normalization of rape culture and ultimately offers solutions, motivation and opportunity to transform it," Ulrich says.
BECOMING HUMAN performances, are Saturday, April 5 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. Saturday evening's performance will be followed by a Launch Party. The Sunday April 6 performance is at 2:00 pm, and will be followed by a panel discussion.
