Biber Rosary Sonatas: The Complete Cycle
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall Seattle, WA
Mysticism meets virtuosity. Heinrich Biber was one of the most brilliant composers of the 17th century, and the Rosary Sonatas are perhaps his crowning achievement. Corresponding abstractly to 15 events in the life of Christ - five mysterious, five sorrowful and five glorious - these sonatas form a rarely heard cycle which is technically dazzling, emotionally profound and ultimately uplifting. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear some of Seattle Baroque Orchestra's finest violinists, including Music Director Ingrid Matthews, as individual solosits, with a continuo section headed up by eminent lutenist Stephen Stubbs.
