FROM THE ASHES: The Birth & Rise of Hip Hop
From The Ashes is an inspiring story about the birth and rise of hip hop culture.  It is seen through the eyes of its protagonist Chris, an aspiring DJ who finds in the emerging hip hop culture, hope of a better life and shelter from the negative forces of gangs, drugs and crime prevalent in South Bronx, NY  in the 1970's  It is inspiring, informative and comical.

Hip Hop  is an American born art form. It was created in the 1970's by urban youth using nothing but their ingenuity to turn what they saw around them ( their parents old records and turntables) into an art form and then a culture. This culture which includes as its core elements the DJ, the Emcee or Rapper, the break dancer and the graffiti artist has mushroomed into a world-wide phenomenon and touch billions of people. The story of its beginning and rise must be told.  From the Ashes while telling the story contributes to an understanding and preservation of this remarkable art form.

Chris Ponder, age 50 is having a peaceful conversation with his best friend Dwayne from childhood when it is interrupted by the noise from his grandson Marcus playing loud rap music. When Grandad Chris tells Marcus to turn it town a conversation ensues about Grandad's knowledge of "quality" rap music. Grandad then shares with Marcus the story of the beginnings of hip hop and his relation thereto as a youth growing up in the South Bronx.

Marcus not only learns about the performances of early hip hop pioneers, but also gets a glimpse into the obstacles that his grandfather's family had to overcome living in the worst urban area on the planet.  Gangs, drugs, robberies and an arson plagued city were a part of the same culture of the South Bronx that produced hip hop.  Hip Hop provides the hope amidst hopelessness and triumph amidst turmoil and tragedy.

Use of electronic cigarettes and a fog machine during one scene.
