Coppelia
Coppelia is a wonderful story ballet set in a European Village in the late 1800's. It tells the story about a beautiful young girl, Swanilda, her fiance, a doll-maker, and his doll, Coppelia. This ballet is engaging with an easy to follow storyline. The stage is resplendent with exquisite and colorful costumes. Coppelia is appropriate for all ages!
Southwest Virginia Ballet (SVB) is a regional pre-professional youth ballet in the Roanoke Valley. Southwest Virginia Ballet has and continues to stand the test of time. In its 23 year history, SVB's distinguishing characteristics continue to include professional instruction, free membership, free costumes, and regional participation, in that many dance schools are represented in company membership. SVB's program is not only a composition of educational and performance experiences that progressively shape the competence and confidence of young dancers to a professional level, but a program that instills the discipline, teamwork, and dedication necessary to be successful in all aspects of life. Artistic excellence is a common thread in SVB's programs and activities. Pedro Szalay, Artistic Director, is an artistic visionary and recognized locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally for his teaching excellence. The company, now with more than 50 members, has received regional recognition and in July 2011 received international recognition at the New Prague Dance Festival, winning first place in classical dance and first place in costuming. SVB was again recognized at the 2013 New Prague Dance Festival with a first place award in classical dance as well as receiving the Grishko Award (second place in the entire competition).
