School of Shimmy
All classes are open to students of any age or gender who want to shake it on stage or in the bedroom. No previous dance or performance experience is required. Space is very limited and reservations are strongly encouraged. To reserve a spot email: redhotsburlesque@gmail.com with S.O.S. in the subject line. State which classes you are interested in and inquire about discounted rates! All classes are $30.
If you would like to perform at the School of Shimmy Showcase Burlesque 101, 201 and Rehearsal are mandatory classes. The Showcase will take place on Feb 13th at 7:30 pm at El Rio as part of the famed weekly show, Red Hots Burlesque.
March 8th Burlesque 101: In this two-hour workshop, students will learn the history of burlesque, how to create a persona and basic choreography. As well as learning to build your burlesque attitude; feel great about your body, and an open discussion about increased confidence and positive thinking.
March 9th Burlesque for Couples- Strip for your lover: Both partners are encouraged to come to this class, but singles or people looking to take a surprise are welcome as well Students will learn how to create a sexy character specific to your taste and how to make that character move and breath with sexy moves and a built up confidence you'll be sure to pop your partner's cork!
March 15th Burlesque 201:Students are encouraged to come with an act or character in mind. We will develop personas and discuss song choice, prop use, costume selection and techniques for coming up with acts. This class will include lecture and group work.
March 16th Peppermint Twist- Go-Go Moves with Ruby White: Learn the art of the shimmy and shake with the producer of Sugar Shack, SF- Lux and Ruby's Burlesque A-Go-Go, LA and and was resident go-go dancer for LA's infamous 60s dance party, Satisfaction. Learn traditional 60's moves as well as techniques for keeping it go-go-ing all night long.
March 22nd The Schmooze- Business of Burlesque with Lady Monster and Dottie Lux: Lady Monster has been photographed by: Leonard Nimoy, Charles Gatewood, Eric Kroll and Erica Hardesty Collaborated with: Al Jourgensen's Revolting Cocks, Jello Biafra, Steve Mackay of The Stooges, and the Evolution Control Committee. and Performed with: Margaret Cho, Annie Sprinkle, Nina Hartley, Carol Queen, the New Bomb Turks - and many more. In this class you will learn how to respectfully promote yourself and get bookings far and wide.
March 23rd Burlesque Crafting:Fans, hats, pasties, shimmy belts, flowers for your hair and more! Make your performance pop and figure out how to do it yourself. Some supplies available day of class and a list of supplies to bring will be provided at registration.
March 28th & 29th Finishing Touches: Rehearsal and Workshop Participants get a chance to go through each of their numbers and address practical questions and concerns with bringing your first act to the famed Red Hots Burlesque (El Rio 2-13-09) stage that very week. Tim Wells is on hand to take your posed or live photo!
April 3rd, 7:30pm El Rio (3158 Mission Street SF, CA)- School of Shimmy Showcase! Your chance to sh-sh-shake it on stage!
