The workshop begins with a simple exploration of light, shadow and silhouette. We then move to create our own puppets after exploring numerous design methodologies, materials, tools and engineering. The building process happens in tandem with a performative exploration, familiarizing ourselves with different light/projection surfaces, to better critique and revise our puppets during the design process. The workshop ends with performative exercises and a short introduction of your newly made shadow friend.

Taught by Annie Katsura Rollins:
Annie Katsura Rollins is a lover of all things shadowy. She is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota MFA Theatre Design program and a Chinese shadow puppet specialist. She completed a Fulbright fellowship, in 2011, researching and apprenticing traditional Chinese shadow puppetry and has begun a PhD in the subject at Concordia University in Montreal. Last year, Annie collaborated with Droomtheatre in Holland on a new initiative to bring shadow puppetry to marginalized communities. Recent new shadow works include There's Nothing to Tell, which was remounted in 2013 at In The Heart of the Beast Theatre and a short performance called Shadows and Whispers for Café Concrete in Montreal. This year, Annie has taught a workshop at the Atlanta Center for Puppetry Arts and is doing a demo/workshop for the Virginia Fine Arts Museum in Richmond. She will continue her fieldwork in the summer of 2014 in Gansu and Yunnan province.
