ANDREA CHÉNIER by Umberto Giordano
Portrayed on Broadway and in film, Les Miserables relates the horrific struggles of living during the 1830 French Revolution. Likewise, Giordano's opera relates the true story of André Marie Chénier, a French poet and victim of the perilous years of the first French Revolution. Known for his sensual, emotive poetry, he was guillotined for alleged "crimes against the state", just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror. Dramatic highlights include Maddalena's heartbreaking aria "La mamma morta" as heard in the popular film "Philadelphia" starring Tom Hanks, and Chénier's, "Improvviso", his passionate vision of France, all weaved into a conflict of love and jealousy. Philadelphians may also recall the Opera Company of Philadelphia premiere featuring Lando Bartolini and Diana Soviero directed by Bernard Uzan in 1997. Satisfying a void of almost three decades, COPA brings this truly verismo masterpiece to diverse audiences in four performances within the Delaware Valley.

In that tradition, ConcertOPERA Philadelphia presents this great masterpiece.

After an honorable discharge in 2008 from his service in the US Army, Mr. Hernández moved to Washington, DC to pursue his dream of becoming an opera singer. Mr. Hernández has performed with The Washington National Opera in the productions of Lucrezia Borgia-G. Donizetti, La Traviata-G. Verdi (Young Artist Performance), Falstaff-G. Mr. Hernández has been conducted on numerous occasions by Plácido Domingo and sang with Maestro Domingo in his "From My Latin Soul" concert in Washington, DC. It was said of this performance that Mr. Hernández and the other young tenor in the program, "already possess powerful voices, great diction and an exciting stage presence. When they sang with Mr. Domingo it seemed, if only for a moment, that the Three Tenors were in a process of rebirth."

Mr. Hernández is a favorite of American and European audiences.  Said to possess a voice with a brilliant and beautiful tone, combined with his Latin flare and passion for music, the tenor delivers continually powerful, breath taking performances.

She has not only garnered attention from portrayals at notable companies such as San Francisco Opera and Singapore Lyric Opera, but has also had a long standing relationship with the innovative Theatre Regensburg in Germany where she sang numerous performances of the titles roles in Norma and in Manon Lescaut. She performed four major roles in repertory with astounding success and unprecedented ease. These operas and roles included Un Ballo in Maschera (Amelia), La Clemenza di Tito (Vitellia), Don Giovanni (Donna Elvira) and Otello (Desdemona). Before her Regensburg debut, she made her European debut as Vitellia in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito at the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn, which was highly acclaimed by both the press and audiences alike.
