WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN: The W.E.S. Group feat. Corcoran Holt
Join us as we march into Mardi Gras madness by celebrating the music of several jazz giants.
THE W.E.S. GROUP
After leading a quartet under his own name (The Will Smith Quartet) for several years, W.E.S. decided to form a group with a different focus. He wanted the group to transcend the traditional classification of jazz from strictly art music, to music that has a world flavor and is not only enjoyed but inspires the best in people.
A highly accomplished and respected instrumentalist, he has performed with James Moody, Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, and with his own band, the W.E.S. Group, which has toured extensively for 15 years.
Echoes of ancestral and native sounds can be heard in this collective of talented musicians, whose folk jazz and acoustic approach create a distinctive sound of peace and beauty. Exceptional musicians in their own right, the collaboration of these seasoned musicians exhibits the passion and spirit of a "great camp meeting in the promised land" of jazz.
Corcoran Holt, a son of Washington, DC, began playing djembe and other West African percussion at the age of 4 as a member of Wo'se Dance Company under the tutelage of Baba Aidoo Holmes & Mahiri Edwards. As a keeper of the rhythm, Corcoran began his study of classical acoustic bass at age 10 with the renowned DC Youth Orchestra (DCYOP). Soon he learned that his great-grandfather, with whom he shared a birthday, was a bass player who grew up in High Point, NC with John Coltrane. Legend has it that he gave Trane lessons. Corcoran feels called to the bass and his work is about honoring the ancestors.
He has had the great fortune to work with prominent jazz figures such as Fred Wesley, Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove, Eric Reed, Jimmy Cobb, and Kevin Mahogany, just to name a few.
