Carlos Nunez
From Galicia, the Celtic region of northwest Spain, Carlos Nunez is widely hailed as the leading player of the gaita (Galician bagpipes)as well as outstanding performer on the flute and whistle. Coming to international prominence in the 1990's when he was 'adopted' by The Chieftains, his frequent tours and recordings with the Irish supergroup leading to his being dubbed 'The Seventh Chieftain,' Nunez has since released nine 'solo' CDs that have achieved gold and platinum status in Spain, including the recent double CD, 'Discovery,' his debut on the Sony Masterworks label. Carlos' stage magnetism and magisterial musicianship have led to raves from the world's press; 'Pipe music as if played by Coltrane or Hendrix' - The Guardian (UK),'The world's only bagpipe star' - Liberation (France), The New King of the Celts' - El Pais (Spain)and 'If it's possible to become a pop star playing the bagpipes, Nunez could be the man. He is handsome and performs with kinetic flair and his playing had the presence and sense of freedom and vitality that are qualities of all exceptional musicians' - Los Angeles Times. In concert Carlos will joined by his brother Xurxo on percussion and a guitarist and a fiddler TBA. As Folk Roots noted, 'Carlos is a scorching piper and flautist; his sound has a pristine quality which hones into the core of the melody's emotion. The band is tight and confident, setting a pace, blasting to the front of the stage en masse at high points. It's quite wonderful and the public can't get enough of it.'
