Pittsburgh playwright/poet/actor Kim El shares her own experience with both the repercussions of low self- esteem and overcoming depression in urban America in her play Straightening Combs. Inhabiting several different personas to tell the story, Ms. El's remarkable performance combines spoken word poetry, songs, and short vignettes to take the audience on an intimate life journey as seen through the eyes of an African American female coming of age in the Pittsburgh Hill District.
