The camera travels from the parched hills of Darfur to the island redoubts of Mindanao, from the street fighting of Tripoli to the palaces of Lagos, from 10 Downing Street to Lake Geneva. At any given moment, a conflict mediator is there on the ground: breaking bread, arranging summits, or hearing out aggrieved warlords. Wherever war is brewing, simmering, or exploding, mediators set to work, calmly convincing combatants and civilians alike to lay down their guns and, at least for an hour, to talk to one another. Conflict resolution insider Anne Thoma followed three senior mediators from the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue for three years to make this sure-handed, clear-eyed documentary. As the mediators negotiate with nomadic tribesmen and government functionaries alike, braving machine gun volleys and top-secret protocol, they demonstrate their patient, nonjudgmental psychology. - Martin Schwartz
