Rocks  & Volcanoes

What's the difference between a pink rock and a black one? How does a volcano explode?  Will the many extinct  volcanoes in our state ever erupt again? Are Mars red rocks like New Mexico red rocks? If you and your child love rocks, and are curious about volcanoes, come explore rocks and volcanoes of New Mexico and Mars together! An optional Sunday Fossil and Rock Hunt Field Trip to Sandia Mountain Center will be offered in February.

Class 1 -  All About Rocks
Class 2 -  All About Volcanoes
Class 3 -  New Mexico's Rocks and Volcanoes
Class 4  - Rocks and Volcanoes of the Planet Mars

Class times are:
Saturday, 10 a.m. - Noon: January 25, February 8, February 22, & March 8

Prehistoric Preschool is a Museum program for 3- to 5- year-olds and their adult companions to explore natural history topics in a supportive and fun atmosphere. All activities are child-centered, hands-on, and age appropriate. Classes include two hours of crafts, songs, games, puppet shows, investigating specimens from the Museum's collections, Museum visits, and a fun and healthy snack. Registration is pro-rated if you join after the first class starts, please contact for availability.

Thursday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.: January 23, February 6, February 20, & March 6

Friday, 10 a.m. - Noon: January 24, February 7, February 21, & March 7

Saturday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.: January 25, February 8, February 22, & March 8

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science reserves the right to cancel any event that does not reach a minimum of 6 participants.
