Hava Nagila (The Movie) - To Benefit the Be Loud! Sophie Fund
Please join us for the first fundraiser for the Be Loud! Sophie Fund, a special movie screening of "Hava Nagila (The Movie)" at the Varsity Theatre. The Be Loud! Sophie Fund was created to honor the memory of Sophie Steiner, a Chapel Hill teenager whose life was cut short by cancer.  Even as Sophie was undergoing the challenge of her own treatment at UNC Hospital, she recognized how much support her family had and how their close proximity to the hospital made this difficult time a little easier. She worried about families who didn't have these resources, and it was her wish to raise money to support adolescent and young adult cancer patients and their families at UNC hospital.  Sophie came up with the idea to show this film, created by a close family friend, as a fundraiser for this cause.  A joyful celebration of family and community, the film is a wonderful tribute to Sophie's beautiful life.

Hava Nagila is to music what the bagel is to food  a Jewish staple that has transcended its origins and become a worldwide hit. Bob Dylan sang it. Elvis, too. And that's only the beginning when it comes to Hava Nagila. Follow the infectious party song on its fascinating journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the cul-desacs of America in this hilarious and surprisingly deep film. Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Leonard Nimoy, Regina Spektor and more, Hava Nagila (The Movie) takes viewers from Ukraine and Israel to the Catskills, Greenwich Village, Hollywood  and even Bollywood  using the song as a springboard to explore Jewish history and identity and to spotlight the cross-cultural connections that can only be achieved through music
