Puget Sound ASHRAE December Meeting
2014 ASHRAE Technology Awards Winners Two projects from the Puget Sound chapter recently received first and second place Technology Award at the Society level. These two project technical features will be presented at the meeting.
Presentation #1 The Existing SIERR Building at McKinstry Station Project has just won First Place in Category I-Commercial Buildings-Existing at the Society level. The 67,000 sf building (originally built in 1907) combine innovation in energy efficiency with historic preservation, believing that the most sustainable building is the one that you preserve. The HVAC system includes an innovative ground source heat pump loop, radiant floor heat, a dedicated outside air system and data center heat recovery. Building EUI is 50.3. Presenters Bio: Dave Budd is a Senior Account Executive at McKinstry and has devoted 30 years to the mechanical engineering field, with the last 18 years dedicated to Design Build. He is currently managing McKinstry's engineering department. Tony Marino is a Lead Engineer at McKinstry and has been involved in the system designs for a wide variety of project types including office buildings, residential buildings, biology and chemistry labs, manufacturing and assembly facilities. Presentation #2 The King County Housing Authority Office project has just won Second Place in Category I-Commercial Buildings-Existing at the Society level. The 36,000 sf building of a former big box retail store was completely renovated to brings together previously separated departments and promotes an integrated agency culture. The project goals were to create an affordable energy efficient "Net Zero Energy Ready" building with a projected EUI of 27. HVAC system include Variable Capacity Heat Pumps (VCHP) and heat recovery ventilation units. The project was completed on time for a total cost of $95/sf using careful design and readily available off- the-shelf technology.
