ADVANCE BASE (Chicago, Illinois)
Owen Ashworth is familiar with nostalgia. His work as Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, an often lo-fi, not-always-Casiotone-based indie pop project that officially came to an end in 2010, encompassed a range of emotions that often tasted more "bitter" than "sweet." Regret, longing, desire, scorn, and jealousy frequently featured on the menu, but what made those feelings resonate was the presence of memory in his songwriting, the idea that even the most painful experiences are worth remembering. Advance Base's sound is a new twist on existing elements. Fundamentally, he's still making catchy two-to-three-minute pop tunes with keyboard kickers. But tonally, Ashworth has turned to softer, darker material more reliant on analog instruments.
Accompanying himself on his Rhodes 54 electric piano, Ashworth sings nostalgic stories about lost loves, childhood friends, estranged siblings and hard feelings over simple drum machine rhythms & spare percussion. Ashworth's keen ear for melody and idiosyncratic skill as a lyricist have only sharpened under the Advance Base moniker. In recent years, Ashworth's songs have been covered by Sun Kil Moon, Ben Gibbard, & Papercuts.
Advance Base's debut album, A Shut-In's Prayer (Orindal/Caldo Verde), was #19 on MOJO Magazine's best albums of 2012 list. The World Is In A Bad Fix Everywhere, a tribute EP to the music of Texas gospel legend Washington Phillips, was listed on the Chicago Reader's Best of Chicago 2013 list.
Advance Base has supported live dates for The Postal Service, The Rapture, Dirty Beaches, & Mark Kozelek (of Sun Kill Moon). Ashworth also performs on the upcoming Sun Kil Moon album, Benji.
