Is This Jazz? featuring Eric Hofbauer Quintet presenting "The Rite Of Spring"
Eric Hofbauer is once again returning to our stage, however this time he is bringing his new quintet to perform his arrangement of the masterpiece that is Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring". Let those words sink in for a second. It's jazz, its The Rite, it's Eric arranging The Rite to be insane jazzit's everything we've dreamed of at this series. While I wish I could compress my excitement for this in order to describe what will be happening, I think I'll instead let Eric's words carry the message:
"Stravinsky revolutionized the music world in 1913 with his use of extreme dissonance and shocking rhythmic energy. Around that same time, jazz started to introduce itself and its own shocking rhythmic language to American audiences. Hofbauer's arrangement, by synthesizing the most memorable melodic and rhythmic elements from the original score with jazz improvisation, takes the masterwork off of its 20th century pedestal and deconstructs it as a vehicle for ensemble dialogue and personal expression. This method of reinterpretation has been a part of the jazz tradition from its inception through the work of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and even Gunther Schuller's 'Third Stream' movement to today.
Both The Rite of Spring and jazz are music of the earth; primal, raw, powerfully emotional music that challenges the mind while striking the listener deep at the core of some collective instinctual soul. One hundred years later, those earth musics have collided, proving that the revolution begun in 1913 is still alive and well if one just puts an ear to the ground to listen."
Opening the night will be my ensemble, the Shaw +7, which is a collective made up of young, local players that I've had the pleasure of hearing and growing with. We'll be performing a set of our own tunes, arranged our way. After us will be a brief explanation of The Rite by Eric, followed by his Quintet's performance. This all happens at 9pm, at AS220, for only $10.
