Northern Lights: Stories from the Land of Aurora
Directors Cindy Uecker and Lindsey Pounders and the Hillsboro Community Youth Choirs are working hard to prepare a magical winter concert for music lovers in Washington County. This concert will focus on songs born in cultures near the Arctic Circle the land of the Northern lights! Dance songs, Christmas songs, even a Lumberjack winter-song are included, in languages including Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Polish, and French! Highlighted in this concert will be selections from Fjellheim's "Norwegian Sami Songs", songs from the Sami tradition. Inspired by the traditional Sami "yoik", which is a very old vocal tradition from Scandinavia and Russia using short melodic phrases that repeat with small variations, Fjellheim uses small elements from this tradition to give a Sami flavor to this contemporary piece that seems to transcend time. Almost like stepping into an impressionist painting, the audience will have a sense of being in those Northern lands in winter, under the glorious colors of the Aurora Borealis.
