Hanz Araki and Friends, Winter Celebration
Award-winning flautist and singer Hanz Araki is joined by an ensemble of extraordinary talent for a concert aimed at capturing the warmth of fireside story-telling for the winter's long nights. Joined by singer Colleen Raney, Johnny B. Connolly on the accordion, and guitar player Cary Novotny, new light is shone on both instrumental music and vocal arrangements to perfectly suit the season.
Although Araki's musical beginnings are in traditional Japanese music -- six generations on his father's side -- it is the music of his Irish mother for which he is best known. He learned much of this music from the vibrant Irish music scene in Seattle and honed his craft touring for years in the US and abroad.
The Raney family is a pillar of the Irish community in Seattle, and Colleen grew up in its very heart. Learning the songs of Ireland, Scotland, and England as a second language in her childhood home, she has proven to be uniquely suited to translate a lifetime of traditional music into her own distinctive style, and has become a rising voice in the Irish music world.
Johnny B. Connolly has risen to prominence as one of the best and brightest button accordion players of a new generation. Acclaimed albums, world tours, and collaborations with the biggest names in the genre have helped establish Connolly as a definitive presence in Irish traditional music.
Cary Novotny is a brilliant and influential acoustic guitar player best known for his unerring rhythm and his finesse at finger-style playing. One of the hardest working accompanists in the genre, Novotny continues to provide a compelling soundscape to any project of which he is a part.
