Hundreds of entries fill Topeka's downtown area every Saturday following Thanksgiving, kicking off the holiday season.|
"Lighted" holiday themed entries include walking groups, dance teams, marching bands, bicycles, Shriners, military vehicles, public service vehicles, floats, car clubs . . . with the "official" Santa's appearance closing the parade. Please decorate entry for viewing on both sides. Open flames are not allowed on entries unless contained (i.e., Hot Air Balloons). Entry cannot exceed 8 feet in width or 13 feet 6 inches in height in order to clear power lines. Driver's window cannot be obstructed and must have a clear view for the safety of others.
Entries will ALL be required to enter from one of two locations into the staging area, starting as early as 2pm. For Shriners' groups, Rolling Thunder group and vehicles pulling a 30' long or longer trailer, entry begins at 14th & Kansas at the Shrine Temple. ALL OTHER ENTRIES enter 8th & Harrison and will be directed to their designated staging location. Entry closes at 5pm in order to prepare for parade kickoff at 6pm.
ALL LICENSED VEHICLES are required to go through the Shawnee County Emergency Management Rapped Tag process at either entry point in order to participate. Vehicles that do not comply will be removed. Entries will also receive their official MKA Parade "HANG TAG" at this time.
DROP-OFF LOCATION of walkers is routed through 8th & Harrison as well, dropping off walker at 9th & Harrison. Driver will then be directed off Harrison at 9th Street and directed back to Topeka Boulevard to exit.
CANDY and TRINKETS are allowed, but may not be thrown from a float or vehicle. Walkers representing your entry must be available to walk on both sides of the entry, hand passing candy to the crowd. ABSOLUTELY NO THROWING into the crowd or on the parade path for the safety of children. If spotted doing so, your entry will immediately be pulled from the parade. We encourage you to pace the distribution so it can make it through the route. Please do not dump leftovers in the street, as this causes safety issues.
PARKING for float participants is provided in the West Lot of the Staging Area. Additional parking available in the City Parking Garages prior to start of Rescue Run (4pm at latest to enter garages). Topeka Metro will also provide transportation to the parade area from the City Lot at 8th & Madison starting at 3pm.
Because of costs to host a parade(barricades, toilets, permits, insurance, etc.), volunteers will be collecting donations under security supervision. We hope all entries will appreciate the efforts that go into providing this for the community and will participate with their generosity. (Suggested donation $10)
We hope you enjoy this annual "Lighted" parade and will step your decorating up a notch, as once again, we will have an entry contest via CJ Online's Spotted.
