About the Meisner Technique:

Sanford Meisner was a member of the Group Theatre, the most important repertory theatre of the 1930's and arguably, the history of American theatre, training several of its most influential teachers, playwrights and directors of the 20th century. After the dissolution of the Group Theatre, Meisner moved on to the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where he developed the technique and systematic actor training he became known for.

The basic exercise that Meisner enlisted is called the Repetition Exercise. In this exercise, two actors sit across from each other and respond to each other repeating a phrase phrase concerning each other's behavior and the interaction, e.g. "You look displeased with me." As the phrase is repeated, it changes in meaning, tone and intensity as the actors react to one another. As the exercise progresses, the actors respond more freely and spontaneously, both physically and vocally. The exercise develops over a period of months, gradually becoming an improvised scene, eventually graduated to fully developed scripts and character creation, culminating in a performance.
