BIPP Educational Series - Art of Facilitation
Steve and Dorthy Halley, from the Family Peace Initiative in Topeka, Kansas, will facilitate a two-day experiential workshop to expand the batterers intervention practitioner's skill in the art of facilitation. With an emphasis on the "River of Cruelty" model of trauma informed care, this training challenges the practitioner to move beyond a specific curriculum and embrace those skills that are critical for creating positive change in those who batter.  14 CJAD Approved Hours of CEUs will be provided at this training.

The facilitation style created by the Family Peace Initiative (FPI) utilizes a leadership approach which will be practiced in this training. It has been shown to be highly effective at quickly engaging involuntary clients.  Please note that the training content builds throughout the two-day session and participation in both days is essential to receive the most benefit for all involved.

Through a highly experiential process, participant will learn:
1.  The application of trauma-informed care in batterer intervention
2.  Accountability without shame
3.  Working with, and around defense systems
4.  The value and risks of leading by example
5.  The different batterer motive types and related risk factors, and effective response.

Because of the intimate nature of this training, the registration will be capped at 30 participants.

BIOS:
Steven M.S. Halley, LSCSW, is the clinical director of Halley Counseling Services, P.A. and the Director of the Family Peace Initiative (FPI). Halley holds a BA in History and masters degrees in outdoor administration and social work. For the past 25 years Halley has worked as a wilderness counselor, probation officer, therapist, and batterer intervention provider. His success in understanding and working with those who batter has created high demand for his trainings. Halley serves on the Kansas Governor's Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board. He is an avid golfer and songwriter.  He co-authored, "Halley's Alley: Commentaries on marriage, family, healthy relationships, parenting, loss, grief, trauma, and domestic violence," with his partner, Dorthy Halley.

Dorthy Stucky Halley, LMSW, is the director of the Victim Services Division of the Kansas Office of Attorney General Derek Schmidt, and an expert on domestic violence dynamics and batterers. Halley's development of a motivation typology for those who batter has opened the door to a new understanding for judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, advocates, and others working in the domestic violence field. She has led the state efforts to develop standards, certify batterer intervention programs, and apply evidence-based practice in this field. Halley started providing services to victims in 1986 and served as executive director of Safehouse, Inc. for more than a decade. During this time, Halley developed a model rural batterer intervention program in the early 90's, which she continued to operate while teaching social work at Pittsburg State University for another decade. Halley served as president of the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV), the Kansas Organization for Victim Assistance (KOVA), and the Kansas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (KNASW).  She received the Outstanding Victim Advocate of the Year award in 1996, and has provided more than 1000 presentations on a national, state, and local level to more than 20,000 people on batterer intervention, domestic violence, and other topics regarding victimization. She is an author, and provides expert witness testimony in domestic violence cases.
