Raqs Sharqi Basics: Interpreting Rhythm & Melody Through Movement - Kaori

This workshop focuses on listening for and hearing rhythm changes, and how to express those changes through movement techniques.  We'll also consider the melodic component of the music, and ideas for how to express the "emotion" of the melody as represented by the instruments most commonly found in classic Middle Eastern music.  Whether you're drawn to Egyptian Cabaret style (Raqs Sharqi) or Tribal style, Interpreting Rhythm & Melody Through Movement will enhance your repertoire with powerful, yet easy to learn movements  so your dance flourishes!  Both beginning and intermediate dancers welcome.

2:00 to 3:30
Poi Basics - Leslie

What is Poi?

Poi are a traditional Polynesian dance prop made of a ball on a cord, that are used in dances by the Maori, the Native people of New Zealand. The Maori tradition has been adapted into a modern art form of spinning that borrows heavily from juggling, martial arts and other theatrical sources.

We will cover poi basics: length of poi, holding, forward spin, Backwards spin, Split time, Low turn, High turn, tuck turn, corkscrew, chasing the sun.

-All of these moves will be applicable to single and double veil.

*All students will need to bring there own practice poi to the workshop. Some practice sets will be available for sale and directions to make your own can be sent in advance at your request.
