YONAT Mayer is a refreshing voice in today's Bay Area independent music scene. Her music is at once soul stirring and soulful. Her poise and joy in any musical setting are remarkable as she is just as comfortable performing solo with a loop-pedal sitting on the floor of a yoga studio as she is fronting a 6 piece-band at a night club. Yonat is a mesmerizing talent whose music paints the narrative of a guide and inspiration to those who listen deeply. "GUNFLOWERS" by Luis Piek
Looking closely, one sees the 'heads' of these sunflowers are composed completely of used bullet shells. The inspiration for the piece came when the artist was mountain biking through the Nevada Desert and while coming down a steep incline inadvertentlyentereddirectly into the backside of a firing range where residents were firing assault rifles and 9mm handguns. Surviving this harrowing experience inspired him to bring together his own view of the desert as a source of infinite refuge and contrast it against itsubiquitoususe as a makeshift place for target practice. Collected from the desert floor and polished individually by hand, the bullet shells were assembled in unique symmetrical patterns into the heads of each flower.
