Spontaneous Vinyasa ~ find your creative practice through flow yoga ~

Vinyasa, which more literally translated means "to place with intention", has come to signify syncing movement with the pulse of the breath, and is the basis for much of modern western yoga asana, or postural yoga practice. Focusing the mind on the breath and intentionally moving to this rhythm is part of the meditative aspect of physical yoga - it helps induce effortless mindfulness, where we become absorbed in the direct experience of what we are doing while we are doing it. Focusing stills the static of the mind, rhythmic breathing helps steady the heart rate and the nervous system, and fluid movement awakens stagnancy, facilitating a calm aware state of presence.

In this workshop we will utilize the formula of sun salutations - short "vinyasas" often used at the beginning of yoga practice to warm up the body - as a skeleton to build your own yoga practice or guide a class. I will offer a variety of sun salutations from different traditions, then we will freestyle experiment by adding extra postures to make up our own balanced sequences that flow around the structure of the sun salutation. We will explore different ways to warm up the body before downward dog, as well as alternatives to this often used and yet not always accessible or appropriate posture. We will recognize similarities between postures to come up with alternatives and variations to fit the cycles of our own personal practice as well as to cater to a range of experience and ability levels in the same class. We will experiment with linking postures in a safe and effective way so that each leads into the next in an intelligent sequence. We will hold poses and tune-in to some simple cues for experiential alignment, and then listen to feel where the body wants to go next. As we move, we will practice finding intuitive alignment even in the flow, noticing the effect of pace and intensity. We will play with having a set plan and then letting the plan go to free-flow spontaneous vinyasa sequences. In the tradition of the sahaja - the truly spontaneous being - we will train ourselves to be in harmony, and then get out of the way to let the flow move through us.
