We extend warm greetings to our community to join us for the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association (NISA), Eighth Annual Northwest Indian Storytelling Festival and Emerging Tribal Storytellers Workshop. The Festival is held in the evening October 18th & 19th, with the Emerging Storytellers Matinee on Sunday afternoon October 20th, 2013, at the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) in Portland, Oregon. The NISA Emerging Tribal Storytellers Workshop is all day Saturday, October 19th, and Sunday morning, October 20th, 2013.

This year's festival features some of the Northwest's finest traditional tellers, including Roger Fernandes (Lower Elwha S'Klallam), who captivates with vivid and colorful tales; Elaine Grinnell (Jamestown S'Klallam), whose warmth and sense of humor wrap you up and hold you close; and Toby Joseph (Apache/Ute), whose stories touch the heart, as at a recent gathering, draped with his children, opening with, "a long time ago, when the animals could speak and when people would listen". Traditional drumming and singing, with opening prayer and commentary by treasured native elders are integral to the events.

Please join us for a weekend of traditional culture and learning. The evening festival events begin at 7:30 pm and admission is $20 to help cover expenses.

The Northwest Indian Storytellers Association (NISA) was formed in 2005 to encourage, preserve and strengthen traditional storytelling among tribes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and to share tribal oral cultural arts with our entire regional community.

Sponsors of this year's festival include Native American Art Council (A council of the Portland Art Museum), Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA), Portland Community College - Cascade: Native Nations, KBOO Community Radio 90.7, Northwest Indian Storytellers Association (NISA) and Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. Funding provided by National Endowment for the Arts, and Multnomah County Cultural Coalition.
