SOLEMN MOCKERIES a play by Rick Creese
"BRUTALLY FUNNY...BRUTALLY SAD" (LA Weekly)
The Midnight Company, performing at Stray Dog Theatre's Tower Grove Abbey, tells the true story of William-Henry Ireland, who in 1795, ignored by his father, detested by his stepmother and despised by his teachers, became an expert Shakespearean forger. Now, 30 years later, he returns to his London home to clear his name, and tells how he produced dead-on facsimiles of the Bard's signature, his business papers, love letters, a rewritten LEAR and the "lost" Shakespeare play VORTIGERN. Taking London by storm, Shakespeare's (Ireland's) VORTIGERN was scheduled to play the Drury Lane, the finest theatre in town, with a cast of some of the greatest performers of the day - Richard Kemble, Mrs. Siddons and Mrs. Jordan, mistress of the play's benefactor, the Duke of Clarence. The chaos at what became the one and only performance of VORTIGERN is the big finish to this very smart, very funny and sometimes sad one-man show. Midnight's Artistic Director Joe Hanrahan plays Ireland (and 17 or so assorted characters, including one-eyed tour guides, theatre nobility and regular nobility (and their mistresses), a farmer, a pastor, and more.) The Associate Director of Midnight, Sarah Whitney, directs.
