Young children and their families are invited to celebrate the joy of reading at the 7th annual StoryFest, planned for Saturday, October 12, 2013 in Ventura, 9 AM to 2 PM. The free event features story-telling, book giveaways, musical activities, Truckfest (opportunity for children to get up close and touch trucks and a fire engine), and plenty of fun. Media are invited to attend this special event at the Ventura Unified School District Education Service Center, 255 W. Stanley Avenue, Ventura. At 9:30 AM the Buena Drum Line will lead the StoryFest dragon mascot and all children in an opening parade. The event is presented by the Ventura Neighborhood for Learning (VNfL) program and the Ventura Education Partnership.
Community celebrities will be reading books throughout the day in each of six story tents. Books will be read in English, Spanish, and American sign-language, and every child who visits the story tents will receive a free book. Children and families will also be able to sign-up for library cards at the event by presenting a photo identification plus proof of resident address. Special activities will be offered by local organizations serving children. There will also be a buy-one get-one-free book fair, and food for purchase.
The event celebrates the importance of reading to children. Sharing books and stories with children, including infants and toddlers, is an important way of helping children prepare to read. According to experts, families that encourage songs, stories and books at a young age help their children be better students when they enter school years later.
The event will showcase the Ventura Neighborhood for Learning program and the services that it provides for families with young children. Child development and early learning opportunities, as well as family support services and access to health and mental health services, are provided through the VNfL Family Resource Centers and service sites located at Sheridan Way, Will Rogers, EP Foster, Elmhurst and Saticoy elementary schools.
