A BESERE VELT, acclaimed for its recent landmark shows about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and the Bread and Roses Strike, weaves the heartache and irrepressible idealism of Yiddish folk music into a vision of justice and humanity for a 21st century world. From haunting melodies to workers' anthems, the songs come alive in their multi-layered harmonies.
THE GUY MENDILOW ENSEMBLE unites internationally recognized musicians from Argentina, Israel, Palestine, Japan, the USA and the UK to reimagine songs from the old Sephardi communities of Sarajevo, Salonika and Jerusalem. Get ready for an emotionally powerful, artistic voyage awash with warm harmonies, intricate textures and spellbinding rhythms.
OUR HONOREE, Mike Felsen, is the immediate past-president of Boston Workmen's Circle and a tireless social justice activist. Twenty-five years ago, he joined with other parents to reopen the Boston Workmen's Circle Shule(Jewish Cultural Sunday School) and revitalize our now thriving Boston Workmen's Circle community. As president for the past six years, Mike championed alliances with an array of Jewish and social justice organizations. He was an influential and vocal advocate of building bridges between Boston's Jewish and Muslim communities and led efforts to mobilize Jewish support for the new mosque in Roxbury. Mike has been a prominent voice for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, sharing his thoughtful, informed, and equitable analysis through frequent opinion pieces in the Jewish and secular press, both domestic and international. Mike's leadership also extends to his public service, overseeing an office of attorneys dedicated to protecting the rights of workers across the six New England states. Mike is indefatigable, unassuming, and deeply forthright and caring.
Journeys in Ladino and Yiddish is A benefit for Boston Workmen's Circle, celebrating the 15th anniversary of A Besere Velt and honoring Mike Felsen.
