THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA
(1954) dir Joseph L. Mankiewitz w/Bogart, Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien [128 min; 35mm]
Joseph Mankiewicz's Technicolor-noir exposé of Hollywood's vapid exploitation of beauty and passion is as apt today as it was 60 years ago. Ava Gardner stars as a gorgeous dancer who is whisked away from the nightclubs of Madrid and into the withering spotlight of stardom. Bogart plays the washed-up movie director who is hired to help make her star shine as an outwardly bitter but inwardly caring guy who, in the end, is the only person she can trust.
