THE DESPERATE HOURS
(1955) dir William Wyler w/Bogart, Fredric March, Arthur Kennedy, Martha Scott, Dewey Martin, Gig Young [112 min; 35mm]
A return to tough-guy form for Bogart as he takes a rare late-career turn as the bad guy in this taught thriller. Three escaped convicts descend upon a defenseless suburban family to wait out a police manhunt. Bogie plays the leader of the pack as Glenn Griffin, a killer who will stop at nothing to escape. Legendary director Wyler puts together all the pieces in this excellent and disturbing vision of the 'perfect' suburban community disrupted by the ugliness of the outside world.
