FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 11th, 2013
PORTLAND, OREGON-BASED COMPOSER BEN DARWISH DEBUTS "THE LONELY NIGHT", A MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE AWARDED A 2013 RACC PROJECT GRANT, AT ETHOS IFCC OCTOBER 11TH-13TH.
In a run of five shows at Ethos' Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (IFCC) in October, Portland, Oregon-based composer Ben Darwish will debut his latest musical creation, "The Lonely Night", a multimedia stage performance. It was awarded a 2013 RACC Project Grant and the music is loosely described as hypnotic R&B.
On October 11th-12th, Friday and Saturday, there are two performances each starting at 7pm and 9pm. Sunday, October 13th, there is a 2pm matinee performance. Doors open 30 mins prior to each performance and the show lasts about an hour.
Ben Darwish, well-known throughout the Northwest as a versatile songwriter and composer, creating everything from free-form jazz and afrobeat to off-kilter indie-pop, doesn't rest on just one sound or style. He incorporates his many musical passions and influences into his diverse sounds.
His latest piece, "The Lonely Night", is a 10-song composition which features Darwish on keyboards/bass pedals, William Seiji Marsh on guitar, Russ Kleiner on drums, and everyone on vocals. Darwish will also play a 60-year old Hammond S6 organ which has chord buttons like an accordion and bass pedals (see/hear in this video with Morning Ritual). Largely down-tempo in nature, "The Lonely Night" incorporates elements of neo-R&B, jazz, rock, and even the influence of Steve Reich. Earlier this year, he received a 2013 RACC Project Grant to turn this composition into a multimedia performance incorporating music, set design, lighting design, and video elements into one seamless experience. This is the debut performance of the piece.
Semi-autobiographical in nature, "The Lonely Night" explores the ego, relationships, and spirituality. Overall, it's based on the human experience and questioning purpose in life. This narrative connects the songs in an over-arching storyline that uses video elements as visual accompaniment. In addition, Darwish considers most of the songs "nocturnes" meaning that they are influenced by the night.
Ben Darwish has created a three dimensional depth in this performance that you can't get out of a regular concert. With generous help from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, this is his biggest production yet and it's a direction that he hopes to integrate into future performances.
