| Description |
In the fourth part of the Modern Media Censorship Lectures, freelance-journalist Lindsay Beyerstein discusses her award winning article Examining the Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act. Passed by the House in October 2007 and currently in committee in the Senate, the Act has provoked controversy on several fronts. Critics say its overly broad and vague definitions of "force", home grown terrorism and violent radicalization leaves interpretation of such terms entirely up to the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security. Ms. Beyerstein will talk about the development and impetus behind the current bill along with the coverage it received within the U.S. news media. She will examine how constitutional and civil liberties issues are covered generally in the media system as it exists today, and look at how it may have changed in recent years. Ms. Beyerstein is an investigative journalist based in New York City. She is currently a national correspondent for Raw Story Investigates where her beat is public corruption and civil liberties. Her reporting has been published in Salon, In These Times, the New York Press, and other outlets. Her photojournalism has appeared in TIME, Salon, the Austin American Statesman, and other outlets. In 2007, she delivered the Norman E. Richardson lecture at the University of Gettysburg on journalism and philosophy. She is a faculty member at the Skeptics Toolbox at the University of Oregon. |
