THE LOVING STORY
The Maine Jewish Film Festival (MJFF), in association with the University of Maine School of Law School (Maine Law), will present a free screening of the documentary film The Loving Story, an event made possible by a grant from the Moser Family Foundation. Co-promoting the event are Maine's NAACP and ACLU, the Holocaust & Human Rights Center and Equality Maine.

The film tells the story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple who fought the anti-miscegenation laws in their home state of Virginia all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 finally overturned those laws in the landmark decision of "Loving vs. Virginia". Represented in their eight year legal battle by two young, Jewish ACLU lawyers, Bernard Cohen and Philip Hirschkop, the Court's ruling served to also overturn the anti-miscegenation laws in 16 other states. Shortlisted for an Oscar, recipient of a Peabody Award and nominated for three Emmy Awards the film reveals the Loving's story using recently discovered motion footage and still images shot during the period, alongside contemporary interviews.

The evening will begin with a reception in the Hannaford Hall atrium at 5:00 with hors d'oeuvres and cash bar, the film will screen from 6:15 - 7:30 followed by a panel discussion. Dean Pitegoff will moderate and panelists will include prominent members of the legal community, tba. Coffee and desert will follow from 8:00 - 9:00. The reception and screening are free and open to the public although tickets are required.
